About Swampdogs Rugby Union NT

8 May 2015 by Josie Blake

Swampdogs Rugby Union Football Club (RUFC) was formed in 1986 as the Humpty Doo Swampdogs. For a short period it was known as the Litchfield Swampdogs and officially changed the name to Swampdogs Rugby Union NT in 2005.

The Swampdogs Rugby Union Football Club is the only Rugby Union Club in the rural area of outer Darwin and has both senior and junior teams in the Darwin Competition. The club caters for girls from 4 years to 12 years of age and boys from 4 years to 18 years of age. The senior team plays in the Darwin Reserve Grade competition and caters for men nineteen and over. In 2014 Swampdogs will field an “A” Grade in the Darwin competition. In 2013 the Reserve or “B” grade were premiers.

Swampdogs Rugby Union NT is a non-profit sporting organisation whose aim is to provide an environment that will allow our Rugby Union Players to become the best they can. We pride our club on being family orientated and keeping family’s involved in physical and healthy activities.

Swampdogs have approximately 250 Members and players. Ages range from 4 to 60 years. As with all sporting clubs, we survive on registration fees, fundraising, and sponsorships to assist our players in competitions in Darwin, interstate and overseas.

Over the past few years we have experienced growth in team numbers and are now looking for sponsors to help continue supporting the Swampdogs with the growth of new members and players in the rural area to achieve being the preferred Rugby code within the Greater Darwin area.

MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the Swampdogs Rugby Union NT is to manage, serve and promote the Game of Rugby Union at all levels in the Greater Darwin Area. It will achieve this by promoting the clubs 5 core values:

Teamwork
Respect
Enjoyment
Discipline
Sportsmanship
UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES and CORE VALUES
A commitment by all to uphold the positive ethos and culture of the club and for all members, parents and supporters to recognize and encourage the clubs core values:

Teamwork
Teamwork is essential to our sport. We welcome all new team members and include all, because working as a team enriches our lives. We play selflessly: working for the team, not for ourselves alone, both on and off the field. We take pride in our team, rely on one another and understand that each player has a part to play. We speak out if our team or sport is threatened by inappropriate words or actions.

Respect
Mutual respect forms the basis of our sport. We hold in high esteem our sport, its values and traditions and earn the respect of others in the way we behave. We respect our match officials and accept their decisions. We respect opposition players and supporters. We value our coaches and those who run our clubs and treat clubhouses with consideration.

Enjoyment
Enjoyment is the reason we play and support rugby union. We encourage players to enjoy training and playing. We use our sport to adopt a healthy lifestyle and build life skills. We safeguard our young players and help them have fun. We enjoy being part of a team and part of the rugby family.

Discipline
Strong discipline underpins our sport. We ensure that our sport is one of controlled physical endeavour and that we are honest and fair. We obey the laws of the game which ensure an inclusive and exciting global game. We support our disciplinary system, which protects our sport and upholds its values. We observe the sport’s laws and regulations and report serious breaches.

Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is the foundation upon which rugby union is built. We uphold the rugby tradition of camaraderie with teammates and opposition. We observe fair play both on and off the pitch and are generous in victory and dignified in defeat. We play to win but not at all costs and recognise both endeavour and achievement. We ensure that the wellbeing and development of individual players is central to all rugby activity.
